How Long Can You Keep a Lace Front Wig On?

If you are dealing with hair loss, you may want to consider investing in a wig. At Gabi’s Wigs, our lace front options with human hair are among the most popular because they are the most comfortable and natural looking.

A lace front wig features a lace mesh at the front of the cap. This lace mesh is customized to match your skin tone and individual hairs are tied to it. This is what creates the natural look. Most people won’t realize that you have on a wig- especially if you choose one made with human hair instead of synthetic.

One of the most common questions we hear from our clients is: how long can I wear a lace front wig? We are here to answer that question right now

How Long Can I Wear My Lace Front Wig?

There are three primary factors that are used to determine the life expectancy of your lace front wig:

  • How often you wear it
  • How you apply it
  • How you maintain it

How Often You Wear It

The frequency of wear has an impact on the life expectancy of your wig. The more you wear it, the shorter its lifespan will be. In addition, your level of activity has an impact. If you have a more active lifestyle, your wig won’t last as long as someone that has a sedentary lifestyle.

How You Apply It

There are several methods for applying a lace front wig:

  • Glue-less
  • Glue/tape
  • Sew-in

A glueless lace front wig has elastic bands that secure it to your scalp. You can wear it during the day and take it off at night. This removes the risk of damage while you sleep.

Glue/tape damages the wig and shortens its lifespan. The hair fibers are typically hand-tied to the lace. These tiny knots can be pulled out by the adhesive over time.

Sew-in is better than the glue/tape method but can cause shedding over time. Plus, it’s much harder to maintain the wig because it is attached to your scalp.

Maintenance Tips for Lace Front Wigs

The best way to keep your lace front wig looking nice and improve its life expectancy is with proper maintenance. Here are a few tips that may make your wig last longer:

  • Brush it several times a day. If your wig is curly, finger-comb it.
  • Wash weekly or bi-weekly, especially if you wear it on a daily basis. You will know that it needs to be cleaned when it starts having an odor or when it looks or feels dirty.
  • Use cleaning products that are specifically made for wigs. These are free from parabens and drying sulfates and will not cause damage.
  • Braid your wig and wear a satin sleeping cap if you wear your wig to bed. This will keep you from damaging your hair from friction against the pillow.
  • Apply hair oil to the wig to protect it- otherwise, the hair will dry out and the wig will break down quickly.
